January 30th, 2012

Many parents feel that they need a parents guide to elementary school. Attending Elementary school is a very difficult transition for young children. Parents need to help their young children as they transition from preschool to elementary school. Here is the parents guide to elementary school:

1. Meet your child’s teacher with your child before they go to their first day of elementary school. This will allow your child to be less afraid of their teacher and allow you to get to know your child’s elementary school teacher.

2. Enclose a picture of your family in your child’s lunch box. This will allow your child to feel a little more relaxed at school.

3. Keep track of your child’s home work assignments and their due dates. You can send a note with your child to school so they can ask the teacher to send a list of weekly home work assignments and their due dates home to you.

4. Pack your child a nutritious lunch. Children need a balanced diet in order to be able to concentrate and perform well in school.

5. Help your child complete their home work assignments and special projects. This will encourage your child to perform well in school. Your child will be grateful for the one on one time with you. You will also benefit because you will be bonding and strengthening your parent-child relationship.

6. If your child is completing homework assignments, find them a quiet place to complete their assignments. Elementary school students are easily distracted. If you have other children make sure they are quiet and respectful of the fact that your child is doing their homework and needs peace and quiet in order to complete their homework assignments. Also make sure that the child is free of other distractions such as television, computers, video games, and cell phones.

7. Make sure that your child knows other children in their elementary school class before they start school. You can ask your child’s teacher for a contact list and see if you can put together a meet and greet or pizza party so your child can make new friends and get to know their fellow classmates before they start school. This will reduce the anxiety that your child feels before they go to elementary school.

8. Make sure that your child gets enough sleep every night. Your child needs to have a reasonable bed time. Having enough sleep will allow children to have enough energy and focus in school. Children need at least eight hours of sleep each night in order to have good concentration and perform well on their schoolwork.

Hopefully, the parents guide to elementary school will help you and your child adjust to elementary school. Remind your children to be safe and never leave their school grounds without permission. Tell your children not to talk to strangers and to never leave their school grounds with someone they do not know or have prior knowledge that that person is supposed to be picking them up from elementary school.

Charter Schools and You

January 27th, 2012

Charter schools are becoming increasingly popular across the United States. More and more families are turning to these centers to provide quality education for their child.

Although these schools have increased in popularity in certain areas, there are still many questions surrounding this form of education. How does it differ from the public or parochial school tradition? Do these schools adhere to the same standards? How do I know if this form of school is right for my family? By learning more about the charter school system, you can feel at ease about deciding whether to send your child to one.

With a little research, you can learn a great number of things about the increasingly popular school. These education centers are allowed to operate in an independent fashion. Chartering allows a school to organize itself in a manner that is appropriate for the community it serves. This means that it can be more in tune with how children in that particular community learn and grow.

Although the basic principles of education are shared, there a few differences between these schools and traditional public schools. One difference, noted by major charter school websites, is the choice involved. Students and educators choose to be part of the charter school system. Teachers have more authority to choose how they want to improve academic results in their classroom and often don’t have to adhere to an established principle.

These schools are publicly funded and should not be considered private. They are open to all students and cannot charge a tuition fee to families. Because of the increase in the popularity of this type of schooling, enrollment can be difficult. In the event that the school in your community is full, there will generally be a lottery to fulfill future enrollment. Occasionally, there can be a waiting list if classrooms have already filled for the year. Check with your local school to inquire about their enrollment policy.

If you have an interest in a particular school in your area or have questions about charter schools in general, there is quite a bit of information available online from national and state chartered school websites. You should also contact your local charter schools. They will be glad to walk you through the enrollment process and answer any concerns you may have with the school system.

When it comes to your child’s education, there are many different types of school systems available. From religious-based and parochial to Montessori to arts-based education centers, it is important that you research all your options. You may find that the best fit for you is not the usual public school and that a charter schools fits your family best.
